Understanding Tax Assessment Appeals

Properties in Washington D.C. are subject to an annual assessment cycle that identifies the market value of the property. This value in turn determines the real estate tax due. If the assessment is incorrect, an appeal can be filed within 30 days of the assessment notice. Both property owners and lessees have the right to lodge an appeal. 

The Office of Tax and Revenue administers assessments, and the Real Property Tax Appeals Commission oversees all appeals.
